Holy Baptism (Christening)

A Baptism is a wonderful occasion for any family and we would want to help you look back on it with the greatest happiness and have good memories of that very special day at St James’.

Enquiries about Baptism should first be made to the Parish Priest who will arrange an initial meeting with parents. The Priest will be as accommodating as possible about the date for Baptism, which always takes place at the
10.00 a.m. Sunday Parish Mass.

Parents will be given a Baptism Application Form which has to be completed and returned to the Priest. They will also receive leaflets for themselves and the prospective godparents, helping them to understand what Baptism asks of them.

A further meeting will be arranged where family and godparents together consider the Baptism Liturgy, its implication for themselves and their child; also, the church community’s supporting role in nurturing the child’s Christian faith.

In Baptism we are thanking God for the gift of life - marking the start of the journey of faith, being ‘born again’ into the family of the Church of God, joined to the life of Christ through the gift of God’s indwelling Spirit. We begin the very public ministry of Christian discipleship. A tall order for all of us, but the most satisfying life anyone can possibly imagine.

Confirmation

For young people or adults thinking of Confirmation, it is taking on board personally the promises made previously in their name by parents and godparents when baptised as a baby. For those who were not baptised as infants it comes as a very personal decision, a decision you make to put Christ at the centre of your life. Adult Baptism and Confirmation are celebrated together with the Bishop present and is always a most moving occasion.

Before Confirmation, there is a course of instruction looking at aspects of the Christian creed, engaging the candidates with their own experiences of faith and life and preparing them for the testing journey of their Christian lives.

There is usually good notice of when a future Confirmation will be taking place and the Parish Priest should be able to let you know.
