"All
things come from you… and of your own do we give you"
You may recognise this verse from the first book of Chronicles; it features in our Service as an optional prayer, which may be said as the altar is being prepared for the Eucharist. Its context in the Old Testament is the description of how, following King David's appeal for money and resources to complete the magnificent temple, his people responded willingly and most generously. They did so while giving thanks to God and praising his glorious name.
Our giving to God should also be undertaken joyously and generously
Giving takes many forms and we all have different gifts that we might share in support of our work at St James' and in praise of God.
Your time and your particular talents are gifts from God and they can be used well in order to be able to give back to him.
Are you grateful? How might you express your thanks for
this place of worship, for the community of St James and all it does
for you?
Do you want to share our church with others and the future community?
If so, how do you consider and plan your monetary giving?
What about the stewardship of what you own? Do you use your home for
God’s work (e.g. hospitality) – or your car (lifts to church,
etc.)?
Do you look after the environment, by recycling waste and saving energy?
Do you support fair trade producers in your shopping or use the fair
trade stall at church? If you have savings and investments, are they
ethically sound?
Many people give their time and talents to our Lay Ministries - essential to supporting the worship experience at St James'; many give their money and we all share in the fruits of this generosity.
In addition to using our talents we should also give regular
thought to how we use our financial resources.
At St James' past benefactors and congregations have given most generously
and, accordingly, we are fortunate that we have been able to use historic
funds for the repair and maintenance of our Church fabric and building.
However, those resources alone are not enough to cover all running costs
Only with our further support can the Church fulfil its mission (see our Mission Plan) and ensure that the vibrant ministry of St James' can continue.
It is the responsibility and the privilege of each member of the Church to consider how he or she can respond with love and gratitude to God's abundant generosity.
Always we give first to God, after spending time and money on essentials for living and family needs. Give generously, as God has promised to provide sufficient for your needs.
