‘Is any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up...’
James 5. 13-15

An ecumenical Healing Service is held three times a year. This began through the friendships shared between the clergy of our neighbouring Churches - St John’s Roman Catholic Church (Duncan Terrace), Cross Street Baptist Church and ourselves at St James’ Church (Church of England). That friendship has spilled over to include many members of our congregations.

You may wish to be there for yourself, or for someone you know who would benefit from the prayers offered for them but might be too shy or unwell to come along for themselves. We are careful to observe confidences given us at those Services and it is a ministry available to all in our community.

Human beings are complex – our physical, emotional, social and spiritual lives are all closely interconnected. In the Bible, healing may be physical, given out of the compassion Jesus had for the sick person; a response to the faith of the sick or of their family or friends. But it is also seen in the broader salvation that Jesus brings.
Healing, reconciliation and restoration are the substance of the good news of Jesus Christ.
For this reason, care for the sick, and prayer through the laying-on-of-hands and anointing with oil all have a special place in the Church’s life.

We pray for the sick every day at St James’. If you want someone remembered who is sick or going through a bad patch, contact the Vicar (Parish Priest) and their name will be added to our list. Also, you can view our Prayer Board for daily prayer and current concerns.

Apart from our ecumenical events - the Ministry of Healing and the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), or simply a meeting to talk over some worry or anxiety can always be arranged with the Vicar (Parish Priest).

Holy Communion is taken every Friday to the sick and the house-bound and we are glad to take the sacrament to any who would value it.
