Our mission at St James' is the creation of an evangelistic, missionary community through prayer, worship and service to the neighbourhood.

In 2006 we began a journey towards understanding our Church's mission.
Through conversations with members of the congregation and the wider St James' community, we explored:

  • What is good and needs to be upheld?

  • What needs to change?

  • What is missing and needs introducing?

We found that what people really love about coming to St James' is being part of a welcoming, friendly and inclusive community that is well supported and nurtured by our Priest. In particular, people appreciate the traditional style of worship with respect for the liturgy and the meditative atmosphere for prayer. They also value the focus on ecumenical and "open" worship including services of healing and remembrance for all in our community who want to join us.

It is also recognised that, through the work of the Pram Club, the use of the Church Hall by community and support groups and through the sponsorship of local and overseas charities, St James' has a strong basis for developing its outreach work.

Understanding and acknowledging our strength gives us confidence to look at the areas where we could improve the way we do things in the future, as well as to consider new challenges. In particular we are looking at how we can:

  • Involve more members of the congregation in all aspects of our Church life

  • Support individuals' spiritual development, prayer life and understanding of other faiths

  • Encourage greater involvement of children and young people in the life of the Church

  • Extend our involvement in local outreach work

  • Find opportunities for more inter-faith worship

  • Play our part in sustaining the environment
