St James' involvement in outreach and community work in the parish includes both the financial support of specific groups such as the bereavement project, CARIS; and the use of the Church Hall by community groups.

St James' does not employ any outreach staff - members of the congregation are involved as volunteers in the running of specific groups

Outreach Overseas

In Africa -

St James' has a keen commitment to several communities in Zimbabwe in the mountains of Manicaland. Two specific projects are supported by the Lent Savings scheme each year (see Giving) and an annual donation for:

  • Home Based Care which enables volunteers to carry basic materials to those with HIV/AIDS in the surrounding villages (buckets, blankets, disinfectant, protective gloves, foodstuffs and occasionally drugs)

  • Orphan Support which provides food and cleaning materials for orphans both at residential Children's homes and in day care centres. A very important aspect is the paying of school fees for those who would otherwise get no education. Also, enabling those from child-headed families to achieve skills in carpentry, agriculture, and dressmaking so that they can support their siblings and grandparents.

We can help many hundreds in these ways.

Our money is channelled through the Transvaal Zimbabwe & Botswana Association (TZABA) and photograph displays, with frequent reports, as well as lively letters and drawings from the children, are both confirmation and inspiration to St James' of the value in this outreach.

More details and photographs about further support are readily available from us.

In South America -

St James' has supported priests in The Diocese of Guyana over many years, and we still respond to specific needs there from time to time.

Through The United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) we are currently supporting a priest in Brazil who is developing new work there.
