The
Sunday School meets every week during term time except for the first
Sunday of each month. Each session begins at 10.00 a.m. in the Church
Hall (on the corner of Prebend Street and Packington Street). It
lasts about 40 minutes and then the children and teachers join the rest
of the congregation in church for the latter part of the Mass.
Typically, a Sunday School session will involve a mixture of reading from the bible, group discussion and some sort of art and craft activity, fun quiz or game. All children between the ages of 3 to 12 are most welcome. However, we ask that children under the age of five are accompanied by an adult carer.
Each term our sessions are based on a particular theme. Recent themes have included –
-
The Circle of the Eucharist - exploring the different components of the Mass, their origin and purpose
-
Children in the Bible - seeing how God uses children in his work, highlighting Abraham and Isaac, Joseph and his jealous brothers, Moses and others
-
The Saints - their role in the Church’s traditions and worship and the inspirational examples they provide for us to follow
In Advent and Lent the Sunday School has a ‘project morning’ when the normal lesson is extended to last just over an hour. These mornings enable us to focus on the meaning of Lent in preparation for Easter, and the time of Advent in anticipation of Christmas.
The children’s work may subsequently be displayed in church; sometimes they take home what they have made or send letters and drawings to Zimbabwe, etc. Also, the children enjoy producing such seasonal creations as Advent wreaths and Jesse trees.
It is most important that the children of the congregation feel that they belong to and have a role to play in our church family.
On the first Sunday of the month, the Sunday School attend the Parish Mass, taking an active part in the worship – greeting people as they come into church and handing them their books, reading the lessons, leading the congregation in the Intercessions, bringing the gifts to the altar at the offertory and taking the collection.

St James’ is committed to the welfare and well-being of children within its community. We regularly review and update our child protection policy and guidelines. All members of the St James’ community who work with children are required to complete a disclosure application to the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) to ensure that there is no reason to disbar them from being responsible for children. Groups who use our Church Hall facilities have to demonstrate that they have appropriate policies on child protection. Our Children’s Advocate can be contacted via: vicar@stjamesislington.org
